The director of Larian Studios‘ Baldur’s Gate III has played down the notion that single-player games are dead (again; this sentiment has been passed around before, if you recall) but noted “they just have to be good.”
Speaking on X, Swen Vincke is perhaps the most obvious person to champion single-player games seeing as how Baldur’s Gate III has been a mammoth success following its launch in 2023. Having said that, there has been a large pivot towards live-service titles from major companies in recent years, and Sony itself has been guilty of this too; however, so far its efforts haven’t been exactly great, with Concord flopping hard.
Here’s what Vincke had to say on the subject:
That time of year again when big single-player games are declared dead. Use your imagination. They’re not. They just have to be good.

Other live-service games that have been far more successful include Fortnite, Apex Legends, Helldivers 2, Path of Exile, Genshin Impact. As for Baldur’s Gate III, the RPG scooped up numerous Game of the Year accolades, sold millions of copies, but that didn’t deter Larian Studios from deciding to move on from the series and the Dungeons & Dragons IP for its next title.
