Assassin’s Creed Shadows Has Surpassed 1 Million Players On Launch Day

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has surpassed 1 million players on launch day, developer and publisher Ubisoft has announced.

Ubisoft launched its latest mainline Assassin’s Creed title, which finally brings the franchise to Feudal Japan, a setting that players have been asking for practically since the original game came out and made its first mark on the industry.

Close to two decades later, it’s here, and it surely seems that players were excited to jump in. However, while it’s still an impressive stat, the likely reason it doesn’t specify ‘1 million sales’ yet is due to the Ubisoft Plus subscription service, which grants premium tier subscribers access to brand new titles, like Shadows, on launch day.

It’s not even 4PM here in Canada and Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already passed 1 million players!,” Ubisoft said from its official X account.

“Thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts for joining this adventure in Feudal Jaapan. We are beyond excited to start this journey with you! “

With Ubisoft’s global setup, teams around the world all worked on Shadows, but it was the Ubisoft Quebec City studio that led the charge. The Quebec City team is the same branch that previously led development on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Immortals Fenyx Rising.

The Ubisoft Quebec City branch is also due to celebrate its 20th anniversary this coming June 27, 2025.

Their history with Syndicate makes Shadows the second time they’ve developed an Assassin’s Creed story with dual protagonists, though the intentions behind how Yasuke and Naoe vary are much stricter than they were with Evie and Jacob.

On the Yasuke/Naoe split, our reviewer said:

“Naoe embodies the full range of the gameplay experience players have come to expect from Assassin’s Creed over the years, while Yasuke unfortunately only covers part of that experience. That’s not to say it isn’t fun to play as him when playing to his advantages, but it does essentially disprove the idea that they are ‘dual protagonists’ and that you could play the whole game as either of them, save for the few select missions that are assigned to a single one of them, for narrative purposes.”
